In Ngora District, Eastern Uganda 2.2% of the children in the district have sickle cell disease, the district has a population of 142,487 (Uganda Population census 2014).
On 30th March 2017 Action Against Sickle Cell Disease facilitated the opening and continues to support a sickle cell clinic at Ngora Health Center IV to serve these many children who could not afford getting medical attention and many used to die due to lack of treatment. So far the clinic has registered 800 patients in a period of 8 months. There is a shortage of drugs which threatens the survival of these children as they may die of preventable causes.In Uganda 20,000 babies are born every year and 70-80% do not celebrate their birthday. 16.3% of children below 5 year who die annually in Uganda have sickle cell disease.
